What will this wiki be about? What sort of articles will be included?

The Olympics Wiki will be a user-driven publishing environment for information about Olympic sporting events. Spectators, athletes, and facilitating organizations will be invited to contribute their content to provide an open view of the Olympics, Olympic sporting events, news, and media.

Community

Who will edit this wiki? Is there already a community around this topic? How will you promote the wiki to ensure at least 20 people join? Give links to forums on this topic if you know of any.

Everyone will be invited to contribute. Spectators, athletes, coaches, and organizers will be invited through different mechanisms. Spectators will be openly encouraged to add to the wiki from the wiki's main page, especially with regards to asking questions about the events, where to stay, and event planning. Athletes and coaches will be invited through their governing organizations. Organizers and sponsors are invited to participate by showing what value they add, but not for the goal of directly promoting their products in the wiki content. To get started, people will be invited to contrubute to the wiki's content regarding the 2008 Summer Olympics. Subsequent Olympic events (Winter and Summer) will be broken out on their own sub-pages for each year in the future. Aggregate information that changes from event to event (winter/summer, year over year) will be updated to reflect the next upcomming event.

Current reference wiki content can be found on Wikipedia's Wikipedia:Olympics. Because Olympics news is cyclical, leading up to the "next" winter or summer event, search is currently the best way to find popular content. Google Search for 2008 Olympics shows currently 2+ million pages on the topic.

A WIKI dedicated to the London Olympics 2012 already exists. Have a look at [1] . January 2008.

Hum, I can see why this question came up: Sports may be viewed as a super-set of the Olympics. I believe that the Olympics represents a significantly different aspect of traditional sports though: the Olypmics is a specific recurring event, and not all sports are represented. Olympics is sports crossed with multi-national politics, which casts a very unique spin on it. It is the pinnacle event for many sports, and it isn't a regular occurance every year. I hope the Olypmics Wikia can capture these unique aspects, and not try to generalize definitions for sports that should live on a Sports Wikia. - thrasher 00:24, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
